Lessons from Bob Proctor

“Being a winner is never an accident; winning comes about by design, determination, and positive action.” – Bob Proctor

Born in 1934, Bob Proctor is one of the world’s best-known motivational speakers and a firm believer in The Law of Attraction. Today, he has an estimated net worth of $25 million, but his journey to the top began from the bottom and his success didn’t come his way by accident.

Think and Grow Rich

As a teenager, Bob dropped out of high school and began looking for work. At the age of 24, he was earning $1 an hour working for his father and supplementing his income by making and selling flower boxes, painting houses, and cleaning floors. Then, in 1961, he read a copy of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and his life began to change – by design, determination, and positive action.

Putting Napoleon Hill’s teachings into practice, Bob set himself the goal of having $25 000 in his bank account by 1970. He was prepared to work hard but he came to understand that hard work alone wasn’t the answer to achieving his goal when he read, “Riches come in response to a definite demand based on definite principles, not by chance or luck.” Armed with this inspirational knowledge, Bob stopped cleaning floors himself and subcontracted the work to others. Within five years, his cleaning company had expanded and was bringing in $1 million a year. Through design, determination, and positive action, he more than achieved his goal.

Mentorship

Despite financial success, Bob chose to leave the cleaning company and set up his own personal development company after reading the works of Earl Nightingale, and then seeking his mentorship. Earl said, “All you need is a plan, a roadmap, and the courage to press on to your destination,” and Bob continued to spread the same message, saying, “Get the basic ideas in place and get moving… Doubt and worry freezes people. Don’t sit wondering if you can do something, just go do it. Doubt of any kind can be ended with action.”

The Secret

In 2006, Bob featured in the movie The Secret, bringing the principles of the Law of Attraction to a wide audience. Unfortunately, many viewers mistakenly jumped to the conclusion that just sitting around thinking about being rich would attract millions of dollars into their bank account. Of course, this was not the true message Bob wanted to put across, and as he put it, “You can’t just think and grow rich, you’ve got to do something with those thoughts.”

Be the Person You Want to Become

In his speeches, Bob spreads the message that to be a success, you must first believe in yourself as a success, and to achieve any goal, you must first believe it’s possible for you to achieve that goal. Without self-belief, success will never be yours, or as Bob puts it: “Science and psychology have isolated the one prime cause for success or failure in life. It is the hidden self-image you have of yourself.”

Those who succeed see themselves as the success they aspire to become, and they choose to be that person in their every thought and every action.
