Changing Your Perspective

“What you see and what you hear depends a great deal on where you are standing.” – C S Lewis

If it takes you three attempts to pass your driving test, are you a success or a failure? You see, someone who passed first time might choose to see you as a bit of a loser, but someone who is about to take their fourth attempt at it might see you as a total winner. It all depends on where you’re standing.

The way you see yourself and the world around you can be described as your mindset. Psychologist Carol Dweck spent decades researching the effect a person’s mindset can have on their potential to succeed in life and it’s her belief that most people fall into one of two main categories: a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.

Fixed – if this is you, you believe that you are who you are because you were born that way. For good or for bad, you see your skills in life or lack of skills in life as simply the way things are. In a fixed mindset, you see a world where you’re a “born winner” or a “born loser”, and nothing can change that – you’re stuck with your lot.

Growth – If this is you, you believe that no-one is born to be anything and who you are now is not fixed in any way. There are no born winners or losers, and everyone has the potential to achieve their own success in life through dedication and commitment to reaching goals, growing as an individual, and remaining open to change. In a growth mindset, your actions today can and will influence or change your tomorrow.

As C S Lewis said, “What you see and what you hear depends a great deal on where you are standing,” and he added, “It also depends on what sort of person you are.”

In a fixed mindset, you can tend to be a “glass half empty” type of person and your natural tendency is to lean towards the pessimistic or negative when looking at your ability to change. However, if you’re going through life expecting bad things to happen and you’re looking for the negatives in everything, those negative happenings become all that you see and hear. But here’s the thing; they’re not happening because you’re a born loser, and you’re not stuck with your lot in life. The only thing that’s keeping you where you are is your mindset.

When you open your mind to a different way of thinking, you gain a different view of life – a whole new perspective. Changing your perspective can change everything.
